2022 Racer Email #3 — Reminders for Mount Marathon Race

After three long years, we’re thankful to again hold the race and the festival on the Fourth of July. We’re returning to “normal” operations in 2022 with one basic stipulation: Please don’t attend if you’ve recently tested positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms of it.

First-time racers bib pick-up:

Complete entire race course. First-time racers (or their parents if a junior racer) must sign a statement that they have completed the entire race course prior to picking up their bib.

Attend the Safety Meeting July 3 (with their parent if a junior) July 3 at 6:45 pm at the Seward High School, 2100 Swetmann Ave.

Register a team of Juniors racers!

Teams allow junior racers to support one another to a common goal. The junior Mount Marathon Race is comprised of boys’ and girls’ races. Junior teams consist of 5-7 members of either all girls or all boys. Each team MUST have at least one member ages 7-11, at least two members ages 12-14, and at least one member ages 15-17. Register your team here: https://mountmarathon.com/for-racer/junior-teams/

Parents of junior racers

Parents or a guardian MUST be present for junior racers to pick up their bib.

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT is ongoing!

Please consider volunteering or having someone in your support crew do so. Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c45aca62eabfbc43-mount

Check out the Mount Marathon Race guide!

This guide features an event schedule, Fourth of July Festival info, great photos, and rosters with bib numbers for each race — not to mention articles about Corbin Stirling, a remarkable comeback story about Kneeland Taylor, and how Seward’s Olive Jordan made the podium last year at age 11.

No dogs on the race course, please!

No dogs, leashed or unleashed, are allowed on 4th Avenue between Railway and Jefferson or along the race course, including all race trails on the mountain. This will increase safety for runners and spectators, and reduce problems with sanitation and clean-up.

Your pets are allowed in Seward; please just keep them off the race course or crowded downtown area.

More informational emails will be forthcoming as we build toward race day.

All emails can also be viewed on the website’s “News” section.

Best wishes for your final preparations,
The Mount Marathon Race Committee

2022 Racer Email #2 — First-time Racers/ Safety Tours

Hello, first-time racers! (or parents of rookies)

This year Mount Marathon has a record number of about 250 first-time racers. We welcome you and wish you a fun and safe event! Mount Marathon can be a dangerous race so we have implemented several measures to help prepare first-time racers.

First-time racers:

  • must complete the FULL race course in training — no exceptions.
  • must sign a statement (or their parent if a junior racer) on July 3 that they have completed the entire course in training (the safety tour is not sufficient)
  • must attend the Safety Meeting (with their parent if a junior racer) at 6:45 p.m. July 3 in the Seward High School auditorium. Preview the excellent 2022 Safety video by Max Romey Productions HERE: https://vimeo.com/716522212/43c729d8a6 . The safety meeting also includes a presentation.
  • may pick up their bib at the conclusion of the safety meeting as long as they have met these requirements.

The more you know about the course, the better prepared you will be on race day. Check out our detailed map and short videos about various sections of the course here: https://mountmarathon.com/for-racer/course/

Our SAFETY TOURS at 12 p.m. Saturday, June 18 and June 25, 2022 are led by experienced Mount Marathon racers and cover the lower third of the mountain. This does not meet the requirement of completing the full race course.

Did I make the Top 50% of my Age Group?

Registration for the 2022 Mount Marathon Race begins on March 1.

One of the main criteria for determining whether you need to register as a priority runner or for the lottery is the Top 50 Percent in Age Group Rule, which was adopted by the Mount Marathon Race Committee in early 2020 and is being implemented for 2022 with results from the 2021 race.

These PDF links show who placed in the the Top 50 Percent of their age group in 2021 (note other Priority Registration clauses and exceptions below).

Men’s Top-50% Results 2021 pdf

Women’s Top-50% Results 2021 pdf

You already have Priority Registration status if you are a:

  • Previous overall winner of the men’s or women’s Mount Marathon Race.
  • Top 10 age-group finisher from the previous year’s race.
  • Skip-A-Year applicant from the previous year.
  • 10 year status applicant (finished the race 10 or more times)
  • Runner with an approved deferral from previous year.
  • Finisher of the junior race the previous year who has aged into the adult race.

Exceptions

  • One-year approved petitions are not eligible for priority status even if they finished in the top 50% of their age group.
  • Earned race spots are not eligible for priority status even if they finished in the top 50% of their age group.

MUSEUM EXHIBIT

The Seward Library & Museum (239 6th Avenue) currently features a special exhibit that tells the story of Dennis Hitt, whose love of the Mount Marathon race inspired the creation of the juniors race.
The first junior race in 1964 was dedicated to the memory of Hitt, a Seward High School graduate who a year earlier had fallen to his death in a climbing accident on Mount Alice while training for the Mount Marathon Race.
Sponsored by Resurrection Bay Historical Society, the exhibit in the atrium is free and open to the public from 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1–4:30 p.m. Sunday.

2021 Racer Email #7: New Start and Finish Protocols

The wave starts and finish protocols will be a bit different this year. Please follow our plan to ensure a smooth race! (Parents of juniors: share this plan with your racer!).

THE START
With waves of 30-50 and quick turnaround times, lining up on time and following volunteers’ and announcers’ instructions will be imperative.

JUNIORS will have just one minute between waves, with Wave 1 starting at 8:30 a.m. through Wave 7 at 8:36 a.m.
Be prepared to stage on 4th Avenue beginning no later than 8:25 a.m.

  • The waves are gender specific: either all boys or all girls.
WOMEN will have two minutes between waves, with Wave 1 starting at 11:00 a.m. through Wave 6 at 11:10 a.m.
Be prepared to stage on 4th Avenue beginning no later than 10:55 a.m.MEN will have two-minute intervals between waves, with Wave 1 starting at 3:00 p.m. through Wave 7 at 3:12 p.m.
Be prepared to stage on 4th Avenue beginning no later than 2:55 p.m.
Info for all divisions
  • Your wave number and start times are on your bib for reference. Each wave is color coded: yellow, pink or blue. If the racers around you have a different colored bib, you’re in the wrong wave!
  • Line up directly facing the volunteer holding a sign with your wave number. Allow for several feet of space around you.
  • A large display clock in front of the start will help you keep track of the official time of day.
  • The announcer will say which wave is “up next”, which wave is “on deck” (2nd in line) and which wave is “in the hole” (3rd in line). Once a wave begins, all other waves will quickly move up one wave to fill their place.
  • You may not start before your designated wave. If you accidentally miss your start, your clock is ticking and you may head directly to the start line and depart immediately.
  • Bibs should be worn on the front of your torso. If you race shirtless, attach the bib on your right thigh. Don’t fold, crumple or alter your bib: it has a timing chip on the back.
THE FINISH
  • Once you finish, feel free to take a minute to catch your breath, grab a drink and orange, and celebrate your achievement. Then continue one block down 4th Avenue and exit the finish chute area.
  • Those needing extra time to recover or get medical treatment will be required to mask up along with the volunteer helping them.
